Nacho Libre Soundtrack Info

Nacho Libre

The Nacho Libre Soundtrack is now available for purchase on Amazon.com and the iTunes Store! Thanks again to all who contacted Paramount to change their mind about releasing the soundtrack! Quite a few songs in the movie did not make it to the soundtrack; here is a list of every song used in the movie (thanks, Bartman!). The rest of my commentary below was made before the album was released.

[More:]

Does anyone know what songs are on the Nacho Libre soundtrack? I know that "Bat Macumba" by Gilberto Gil is on there, as well as "Irene" by Caetano Veloso, and a new song by Beck, but I'm not sure about the rest. Both "Bat Macumba" and "Irene" can be found on the Tropicália: Brazilian Revolution in Sound album, an excellent retrospective of late 60's Brazilian pop. I've even read that Danny Elfman did the score for the movie, although I did not see his name in the credits (I could have just missed it though). I've searched Google and IMDB and have found very little details about the soundtrack. I'm hoping some other folks with deep music archives will know what else they heard during the movie.

Update: As folks have pointed out below, the "I am, I am" song is indeed called "Religious Man" by Mr. Loco. From a post on IMDB's Nacho Libre forum:

The song is Religious Man (Hombre Religioso) by a group named Mr. Loco. They were an obscure Mexico City band that sang only in english. You can find their albums on ebay sometimes. Beck bought the album somewhere for a dollar and brought it to the filmakers. One of their founding members, Jorge Garcia, does radio in Mexico now. They were surprised when they heard about their music being used in the film. BTW, I work for Paramount. Please no more Os Mutantes and other *beep* threads... Mr. Loco deserve the recognition!!!!

Another person on the IMDB board said that the official credit for the song says "Lyrics by George Garcia". One person said he had the song stuck in his head while brushing his teeth, and was ready to go to Mexico with a tape recorder to get the song. Paramount, if you are listening, we want the Nacho Libre soundtrack!

For those interested in contacting Paramount studios to ask for the soundtrack to be released, here is their contact information (snail mail only):

Paramount Studios
5555 Melrose Avenue
Hollywood, CA 90038

Phone: 323.956.5000

If you do call and find out anything, please let us know.

Update #2: According to Carlos Castillon, Mr. Loco performed four songs in the movie: "Religious Man", "Bubblegum", "Mr. Loco" and "Papas". The song "Bubblegum" was done during the boot buying scene. "Mr. Loco" was done when Nacho and Esqueleto go up against other wrestlers. And of course "Religious Man" is played throughout the movie. Los Lobos performed "Saint Behind the Glass" before the credits ran. "Mucha Muchacha" by Esquivel was also in the film. Check the IMDB forum for more information.

Danny Elfman was credited very well in the version I saw. He was top billing in the Music section... with a list of the tracks he produced. I didn't realize it was his music until I watched the credits.

Personally, i am waiting for "Forbidden Nectar" as sung by Nacho himself. Any word on when the official soundtrack is out?

I just called the Paramount # (323.956.5000) listed on this blog. I was connected to an automated attendant. I said "music" and was connnected to some woman w/ Paramount Music. I asked if there were any plans to release the Nacho Libre soundtrack. She said, "Not at this time, but things change. Several people have called about it recently. We are working on it." So I guess people should keep on calling until they get fed up with us and release the soundtrack.

Nacho, that's awesome. I'm glad to hear that they are working on it! From the many comments I've read, the unofficial list of songs so far is:

"Religious Man" by Mr. Loco
"Bubblegum" by Mr. Loco
"Mr. Loco" by Mr. Loco
"Papas" by Mr. Loco
"Saint Behind the Glass" by Los Lobos
"Mucha Muchacha" by Esquivel
"Bat Macumba" by Gil Gilberto (or maybe Os Mutantes)
"Irene" by Caetano Veloso

There is the new Beck song also but I haven't seen the name of it anywhere...

I've been trying to get some of the songs from the end of the credits at the movie. I work at a theater so I've been keeping my eye out and the only one I can remember that you guys havent named is called la llorona loca (possibly la llorana loca) and sorry, I don't know the artist.
PermalinkPermalink 20060622 @ 20:49
Comment from: jabbott [Member] Email
I checked and "La Llorona Loca" appears to be done by many artists... I'm not sure which was in the movie though. As for E-Pro being in the trailer, there are actually a handful of trailers floating around... One has "I need a hero" instead of E-Pro, and another has the organ-heavy song Joe is talking about. I am not entirely sure who did the song -- it sounds almost like David Holmes' work on the soundtracks for Out of Sight and Ocean's 11, or maybe Medeski, Martin and Wood, but I'm not sure.

Oh I found it this morning! Been looping it all day while studying for some tests tomorrow.
It's been played over 130 times today alone! Good song. very inspirational + funny when thinking about how nacho was helped to fly from the ring during the movie
(won't say anymore so as to not spoil anything - no that doesn't spoil anything)

Okay, I'm not sure if this has been confirmed in the comments yet, and I think it was sorta confirmed in the entry but...

Mr. Loco did "Religious Man" the one you hear all the time in the movie with the "I am I ams". Danny Elfman composed the instrumental version (especially for the movie).

Don't believe me? Go see the movie again and look at the music credits.

I worked on the film. It's good to hear that people liked it. There is an album in the works. A release date should be announced in the near future. It will have all of the music and maybe some extra stuff like short dialogue bites/enhanced cd video/anything good Jared Hess and Jack Black can think to throw on there. Jared Hess is writing liner notes. You don't have to call Paramount-- they are on it. Don't steal music-- it's bad karma. I'm sure Mr. Loco would appreciate getting a royalty from the soundtrack album. The Orhpans need flavoring and nutrients for their chips.

I downloaded six of the songs (from Limewire) that Krystal listed in her post, but I can't find that DING-DANG Jables song, "Forbidden Fruit" ANYWHERE! However , I did find the below URL for a more complete listing of the songs on the soundtrack (should the studio ever release it), but, alas, it doesn't even list "Forbidden Fruit":

http://donwest.org/diskolito/release.php?type=comp&id=00148

Btw, there was a song in the movie (don't know if it was listed in Spanish in the credits or not, cuz I don't know the name of the song, and either way, I don't speak Spanish!) that was a pretty big latin hit in the 60's, so if anyone knows what the heck the name of the tune I'm talking about is, lemme know, please! (You can email the info to me at karmadhyana@yahoo.com.)

Peace,
diane

some george guy was credited with the song religious man (i am i am) which is actually by mr .loco which is very stupid

Jorge García Castil, one of three guys that made up the band "Mister Loco" ... not stupid at all.

I'd like to find an official version of the lyrics for "Hombre Religioso"...

Here's an interesting piece of trivia I figured out: in one of the scenes when Ignacio is in the church, the music playing is "TE DEUM: AETERNA FAC CUM SANCTIS TUIS" performed by Chanticleer on their album "Matins for the Virgin of Guadalupe". Is it just a coincidence that in the story of Nacho Libre, Encarnacion hails from Guadalupe and this song is from an album about the Virigin of Guadalupe? What about the fact that this was originally composed by Ignacio Jerusalem and Nacho's real name in the story is Ignacio?

See the flower open to the sky
See the eagle learning how to fly
